Winter Bird Identification
Learn about the Jackson Hole Christmas Bird Count and field marks useful for identifying Jackson Hole birds in winter

Watch a video of Susan Patla's "Christmas Bird Count Training," Jackson Hole 2025. In addition to CBC history and basic protocols, Susan helped viewers sharpen identification skills for common bird species. She also focused on some rarer species that might be encountered in December. Susan Patla worked as the non-game biologist for the Wyoming Game and Fish Department for 20 years based out of the Jackson region. Her work involved conservation planning and monitoring for a wide range of avian and mammal species, including Trumpeter Swan, Bald Eagle, Common Loon, Long-billed Curlew, Peregrine Falcon, Wolverine and Canada Lynx.
See a pdf of "Selected Winter Birds of Jackson Hole," 2023, presented by local author, artist, and naturalist, Susan Marsh. In "Selected Winter Birds," Susan Marsh helps viewers identify the birds likely to be seen in December. Side-by-side photos highlight differences between local species that can be difficult to distinguish.
Many of the bird identifications in both Susan Patla's video and Susan Marsh's pdf are relevant to Jackson Hole birders throughout the year.
